Benue Bans Compulsory Extra Lessons, Unauthorised Phones and Non-Exit Graduations
The Benue State Government has announced new rules for public and private schools as the 2026/2027 academic session begins. Schools can no longer hold compulsory extra lessons after normal classes. Pupils and students are also barred from using mobile phones during school hours without approval. The government said the measures are intended to reduce financial pressure on parents, improve discipline and protect learners. Schools must not force parents to buy customised or non-transferable textbooks. Graduation ceremonies for pupils and students outside exit classes have also been prohibited. Unauthorised individuals, NGOs and other external groups are not allowed on school premises. The Ministry of Education said schools must comply with learner-insurance requirements and other approved policies. Proprietors, principals and head teachers who violate the directives may face sanctions.
