Groom Calls Off Wedding After Bride’s Family Insists on December Postponement
A groom reportedly cancelled his wedding, which was scheduled for 24 October, after his bride’s family asked to move it to December. The bride’s late father’s brother was standing in for the traditional rites, and the groom had reportedly completed the requirements requested by the family. Two weeks before the ceremony, the bride’s brother allegedly said the family needed to hold an Idu-ulo send-off ceremony before the wedding. He said their uncle based in the United States would fund it but would not return until December. The groom suggested holding the send-off after the wedding, but the family insisted on postponement. The groom reportedly asked whether the family would cover extra charges from vendors if the date changed. He was told he should bear all wedding expenses. He then cancelled the church arrangements, sent his kinsmen to recover refundable bride-price items and contacted vendors about possible refunds. I do not think he overreacted. A major disagreement like this before marriage can be a serious warning sign. What would you have done in his position?
