Christian Youth Forum Warns Against Religious Rhetoric in Nigerian Politics
The Concerned Christian Youth Forum has urged religious and political leaders to avoid rhetoric that could worsen Nigeria’s religious and political tensions. The group was reacting to remarks attributed to Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir on Nigeria’s religious identity and the possibility of a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket. It argued that Nigeria’s religious diversity means political offices should not be used as proof that one faith owns the country. The forum noted that Nigeria has not held an official religious population census since 1963. It called for discussions on representation to be guided by constitutional principles, equal citizenship and peaceful coexistence. It also warned that religious supremacy arguments could distract from shared national challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship and institutional failure.
