Blood or Love? Exploring Two Faces of Fatherhood in Yoruba

Blood or Love? Exploring Two Faces of Fatherhood in Yoruba

Languages shape our worldview. In English, there is one word: father. In Yoruba, there are Bàbá and Baba, and they mean very different things. Bàbá is the blood father. He gives life, passes on genes and family history. His role is foundational and permanent, as a Yoruba proverb reminds us. Baba is the present father. He may be a stepdad, uncle, mentor or neighbour. He gives time, guidance and unwavering support, building trust and resilience. True fatherhood combines both. A man who gives life and love shapes a child’s identity and future. Who deserves the crown: the father who made us, or the father who stayed?
