> Ole Gunnar Solskjaer intends to return to Norway before eyeing a return to football following his dismissal by Manchester United. Solskjaer’s three-year tenure at Old Trafford ended on Sunday, with bosses deciding they needed to move in a different direction. United have picked up just four points from the last 21 available, culminating in the 4-1 thrashing by Watford at Vicarage Road over the weekend. United officials called an emergency board meeting in the wake of the latest no show, leading to the decision to relieve Solskjaer of his duties. In an emotional interview, the former Red Devils boss admitted being away from his family during the pandemic has been difficult. Solskjaer surprised players and staff over the international break, giving them a week off despite their wretched league form. During the time away from Carrington, the 48-year-old returned to Kristiansund, something he will now do again. “I’ll spend some time with my family,” he told the club’s official website on Sunday. “That’s been probably the most difficult part, through the pandemic, with Norway being open and here being closed, my family moved back to Norway and the young one, he loves it back there, so we’ve lived apart. So, I’ll spend some time with them. “I want him to be successful, hopefully I’ve laid the foundations for that to happen because I know I’m good at what I’m doing. “I’m a hundred per cent sure to create a football environment, that’s where I’m good at and at some point, I’ll probably be back [working in football].” Reports have claimed a number of United’s underperforming stars were left in tears following the thrashing at Watford, knowing the manager would likely lose his job. Michael Carrick will now take over as caretaker boss, before an interim manager is hired for the remainder of the season. And Solskjaer, who worked alongside Carrick during his time in the dugout, is backing the legendary midfielder to make an immediate impact as he takes charge for the Champions League clash vs Villarreal on Tuesday. “As I’ve said to them this morning as well, trust yourselves, you know we’re better than this,” he continued. “We’ve not been able to show it but go out, chest out, enjoy being a Man United player, Champions League, the biggest stage. If and when you win the game, you’re through to the next round. Michael is going to be in charge. Michael, I have the utmost respect [for].
