Nigeria, Canada Renew Talks to Launch Direct Flights
Nigeria and Canada are moving closer to talks on establishing direct flights between both countries. The discussions were renewed at a meeting in Abuja between Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo and Canadian High Commission Chargé d’Affaires David Sproule. A Canadian delegation is expected in Nigeria in the first week of August to continue negotiations on an Air Services Agreement. Officials are also scheduled to meet on August 6, 2026, to address outstanding issues. Canada proposed standard operating procedures to support the processing and repatriation of Nigerians without legal status in Canada. Keyamo said the Federal Government would involve the Ministry of Interior and other relevant agencies, noting that resolving immigration issues could help clear the way for direct flight operations. Direct flights could reduce travel time for Nigerians travelling to Canada, many of whom currently connect through Europe or the United States.
