Sporting Lagos Midfielder Clifford Honours Late Father With Name Change and First NPFL Goal
Sporting Lagos midfielder Victor Samuel has explained why he now wears “Clifford” on his number 10 shirt. He adopted the name to honour his late father, who died shortly before the club’s promotion-deciding match against Osun United. Clifford said his father regularly called him by the name, which is also how many people knew him while growing up in Nasarawa. Despite receiving the news after training ahead of the decisive fixture, he travelled with the team and helped Sporting Lagos secure promotion to the NPFL. The midfielder marked the tribute with his first top-flight goal against Bendel Insurance at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena. His equaliser helped Sporting Lagos recover from an early setback and claim victory.
