NLC President Calls Nigeria’s Power Sector ‘Biggest Scam’ and Urges Real Reforms

NLC President Calls Nigeria’s Power Sector ‘Biggest Scam’ and Urges Real Reforms

Despite decades of reforms, large public spending, and privatisation, Nigeria still struggles with just 4,000 megawatts of electricity. Joe Ajaero of the NLC and NUEE calls this failure “the biggest scam in the country.” He says splitting the old power company into 20 firms did nothing to boost capacity. Ajaero argues generation, transmission, and distribution must work in unison. He warns that mismatched capacity across these three areas leaves Nigerians in the dark. He also criticises the tariff banding system for favoring urban areas while rural communities stay neglected. Proposing a clear master plan, Ajaero advocates diversifying energy sources. He highlights coal plants, hydropower projects like Mambilla and Zungeru, and gas-fired stations near the Niger Delta as key to boosting supply. He remains sceptical about new ministerial appointments and the presidential task force. Without concrete, ongoing power projects and sustainable targets, Ajaero warns that electricity supply will stay stuck at its current low level.

It's striking that splitting the old power company into 20 entities hasn't raised actual electricity output beyond a fraction of demand.

Labeling the entire sector as the 'biggest scam' feels unfair. Aren't technical inefficiencies and maintenance lapses also major culprits here?

We should focus on consistent maintenance schedules, improved metering and accountability measures to restore public trust in the power supply system.
