WAEC Withholds 167,486 2026 WASSCE Results Over Alleged Malpractice

WAEC has withheld the 2026 WASSCE results of 167,486 school candidates over alleged examination malpractice. The affected results account for 8.59% of the 1,950,726 candidates who sat for the examination. WAEC said the alleged infractions include the use of mobile phones in examination halls and organised cheating in some schools. Supervisors and invigilators accused of assisting candidates have reportedly been arrested and will face disciplinary action. Of the candidates who sat for the examination, 1,200,514 obtained at least five credits including English Language and Mathematics. WAEC also said 116,031 results are still being processed, while candidates sponsored by indebted state governments may not have their results released until outstanding fees are paid.

The figure is substantial, even though it represents 8.59% of candidates. Alleged mobile phone use shows why examination rules remain difficult to enforce.

Withholding results may be necessary, but allegations should be carefully reviewed so candidates are not treated as guilty without a fair process.

Affected candidates and schools should keep their examination records organised and watch for clear WAEC communication before making any decisions.
