Nigeria’s Food Inflation Climbs to 20.31% as Prices Rise for Rice, Tomatoes and Garri
Nigeria’s food inflation rate rose to 20.31% in July 2026, up from 17.52% in June. This is the fifth consecutive monthly increase since March and the first time the rate has crossed 20% since February 2021. The National Bureau of Statistics said the rise was driven by higher average prices for staples and fresh foods, including crayfish, pepper, onions, carrots, rice, yam, tomatoes, garri, plantain, beef, eggs, guinea corn and ginger. On a year-on-year basis, Adamawa recorded the highest food inflation at 51.36%, followed by Katsina at 30.84% and Zamfara at 30.65%. Borno, Nasarawa and Kebbi recorded the slowest increases. Meanwhile, headline inflation fell slightly to 15.43% in July from 15.91% in June, largely because core inflation slowed.
