Senegal to Appeal AFCON Title Stripping at CAS

Senegal to Appeal AFCON Title Stripping at CAS

The Senegalese Football Federation has announced its intention to appeal the Confederation of African Football’s decision to strip Senegal of the Africa Cup of Nations title. The federation calls the ruling unjust, unprecedented, and damaging to African football’s reputation. Senegal won the match after Pape Gueye scored in extra time. The game was mired in controversy when Senegal walked off the pitch in protest during regulation time. Disputes over a disallowed Ismaila Sarr goal and a late VAR-awarded penalty for Morocco prompted the team to leave the field for 15 minutes. CAF later applied Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations. As a result, Senegal forfeited the match 3-0 and Morocco were declared champions. The federation will file its appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne at the earliest opportunity.
