I Reunited With My Birth Parents After 13 Years—Then I Walked Away
I spent my first thirteen years as “Bolanle,” convinced I was the last child in a Lagos slum family. Unbeknownst to me, my real parents were alive and searching. My mother had tried to abort me at 18. She left me with a midwife’s household. They changed my name, sedated me when my mother visited, and hid my true heritage. In 2013, my father found me on Facebook and rescued me. But I became his housegirl and my mother’s unpaid helper. Neither parent enrolled me in school or treated me like their daughter. Today, I cut both parents off. I live on my own in Ibadan, saving for a cybersecurity course. I refuse to raise children under the shadow of family betrayal.
