Insecurity and Kidnappings Threaten Students’ Focus During WASSCE
The ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) faces rising security fears as abductions in Borno and Oyo states leave students anxious across more than 24,000 centres. In mid-May, suspected insurgents kidnapped dozens of pupils, students, and teachers in separate attacks on schools in Mussa community, Borno, and Oriire LGA, Oyo. None of the 88 victims has been released, prompting closures and relocations of affected schools. Education stakeholders warn that trauma, fear, and disrupted study routines could dent performance for the 1.9 million candidates sitting exams between April 21 and June 19. They urge deployment of trained security personnel, rapid response teams, rescues of abductees, and psychological support for affected students. Student leaders and parents call on federal and state governments to prioritise school safety, prosecute kidnappers, and restore confidence in the education system before more pupils abandon their studies.
