Three Years Without a Nationwide ASUU Strike: Why University Stability Matters

For decades, ASUU strikes disrupted Nigeria’s public universities. Students could not rely on academic calendars, parents struggled to plan, and a four-year course often lasted far longer than expected. Since President Bola Tinubu took office in May 2023, there has been no prolonged nationwide ASUU shutdown. Disagreements, ultimatums and negotiations have continued, but classrooms have largely remained open while talks go on. This stability matters. Students can plan with more certainty, parents can budget better, and universities can complete semesters and sustain research. Lecturers still deserve improved welfare, while funding and infrastructure gaps need urgent attention. But keeping universities open is progress that should also be acknowledged.
