Ogun Governor Dismisses Deep Sea Port Abandonment Rumours, Highlights New Projects

Ogun Governor Dismisses Deep Sea Port Abandonment Rumours, Highlights New Projects — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun rejected claims that his administration abandoned the proposed Deep Sea Port in Ogun Waterside. He clarified that work is ongoing and the facility will rank among the deepest ports in Sub-Saharan Africa when completed. Speaking at the commissioning of the Stadium–Luba–Tam Balogun Road in Ijebu-Ode, the governor also refuted suggestions that his government relocated the Dangote Refinery. He explained the refinery decision predated his tenure and urged accountability for earlier administrations. Abiodun announced that oil exploration has begun in Eba, moving Ogun closer to its long-standing promise of becoming an oil-producing state. He added that previous governments failed to harness existing deposits commercially. Among other achievements, the governor cited the federal takeover of Tai Solarin University of Education, the Dry Port development, the Sagamu–Ijebu-Ode Expressway reconstruction, and completion of over 26 roads in Ijebu-Ode with a dozen more underway.

What measurable economic benefits can Ogun expect once this deep sea port becomes fully operational, and when might that occur?

Spot on! Once up and running, it should spark cargo growth and fresh job opportunities—and the finish line might be closer than it seems.

So far the governor insists work is ongoing, yet we've heard little about actual progress milestones or budget allocations for the port site.

Considering this project's scale, the state government should publish a detailed construction timeline and quarterly reports to build public trust.
