Jacob’s Night at Peniel: Wrestling with God
In Genesis 32, Jacob returns to Canaan filled with fear over his brother Esau’s approach. He divides his family and livestock and sends gifts ahead to seek peace. Left alone by the Jabbok River, Jacob prays in humble desperation. He wrestles all night with a mysterious man—God in human form—and refuses to yield despite a dislocated hip. At dawn, Jacob clings to the promise of blessing. God renames him Israel, “he struggles with God,” marking Jacob’s shift from self-reliance to trust in divine grace. He limps away with a lasting sign of this pivotal encounter and covenant.
