Paediatrician Warns Parents About Excess Sugar and Children’s Diabetes Risk

Paediatrician Warns Parents About Excess Sugar and Children’s Diabetes Risk

A paediatrician at Lagos University Teaching Hospital has warned that frequent consumption of free sugar can raise children’s risk of obesity, tooth decay, insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Free sugar includes table sugar and sugars added to processed foods, sweetened drinks, snacks, honey and fruit juices. The World Health Organisation advises that free sugar should make up less than 10 per cent of daily energy intake. Parents are advised to check food labels, limit sugary biscuits and drinks, serve regular balanced meals and encourage water. Whole fruits, plain yoghurt and age-appropriate nuts or peanut butter are healthier snack options. Schools can also help by teaching children about healthier food choices and limiting sugary snacks during celebrations.
