Why Igbo Entrepreneurs Are Often Ranked Among the World’s Most Enterprising Communities

There is no objective global ranking of the world’s most industrious ethnic groups. However, some communities are widely recognised for long traditions of commerce, skilled work, entrepreneurship and diaspora business networks. The Igbo are often included in such discussions because of their strong presence in trading, manufacturing and small-business development in Nigeria and abroad. The Igbo apprenticeship system is also frequently cited as a model for helping young entrepreneurs gain skills, capital and business experience. Other communities commonly noted for commercial and entrepreneurial traditions include the Chinese, Gujaratis, Jews, Lebanese, Armenians, Punjabis, Koreans and Tamils. These reputations reflect historical, cultural and economic circumstances, not any inherent superiority in hard work.
