Guide to the Catholic Prayers of the Faithful in Mass
The Prayers of the Faithful, also called the Universal Prayer, are intercessions offered during the Catholic Mass. A lector or deacon reads them after the homily, and the community responds with “Lord, hear our prayer.” Intentions typically move from global to local needs: for the Church and its leaders; for world authorities promoting peace and justice; for relief from conflict, hunger, and disasters; for those burdened by sickness or unemployment; and for the local parish and departed members. Keep each petition concise and rooted in real‐world concerns. After every intention, the congregation replies “Lord, hear our prayer.” The priest then closes with a final prayer.
