Ex-DSS Chief Urges Diverse Arms Suppliers, Warns Against Security Office Overlap

Ex-DSS Chief Urges Diverse Arms Suppliers, Warns Against Security Office Overlap

Mike Ejiofor, former Director of the Department of State Services, has called on the Federal Government to broaden Nigeria’s defence procurement and expand international security partnerships. He warned that relying on a few traditional allies amid global conflicts could leave the country stranded and cited Turkey and China as viable alternatives for military hardware. Speaking on a current affairs programme in Ogun State, Ejiofor questioned the effectiveness of Nigeria’s partnership with the United States in recent counterterrorism operations. He urged a review of foreign collaborations to ensure they deliver tangible gains for internal security. He also cautioned that the newly established Office of the Special Adviser on Homeland Security must have clearly defined responsibilities to avoid overlapping with the National Security Adviser’s office. Ejiofor emphasized that lasting solutions to insecurity require robust intelligence gathering, strategic planning, and coordination among agencies. Highlighting attacks on high-profile individuals despite heavy protection, he advocated a strength-based approach to negotiations with armed groups. He insisted that security agencies be better equipped and urged Nigerians to stay vigilant, especially when travelling.
