Calabar–Itu Road Repairs Bring Relief, but Commuters Demand Full Completion
The rehabilitation of the Calabar–Itu federal highway is beginning to ease a journey that commuters say once took as long as six hours. The road links Cross River and Akwa Ibom and has long been affected by potholes, flooding, failed sections and frequent vehicle breakdowns. Drivers and passengers say improved sections are reducing travel time, vehicle repairs and the uncertainty of arriving late for work, medical appointments, business meetings and examinations. Traders also expect quicker movement of vegetables, fruits and other perishable goods between both states. Road users, however, want the project completed across all sections. They are also calling for effective drainage, culverts and regular maintenance so that heavy rainfall does not damage the highway again. A fully functional Calabar–Itu road could lower transport costs, improve access to markets and hospitals, and strengthen trade and travel between Cross River and Akwa Ibom.
