Is Jesus God or the Son of God? A Biblical Exploration
This question sits at the heart of Christian belief and has fueled discussion for centuries. On the surface, it may appear complex, but a clear picture emerges when we examine Scripture. The title “Son of God” appears throughout the Bible. At Jesus’ baptism, a voice from heaven declares Him as God’s beloved Son (Matthew 3:17). Jesus also referred to God as His Father and prayed regularly, showing a deep relationship. In Jewish thought, “Son” can signify shared nature, not inferior status—so Jesus’ claim troubled religious leaders (John 5:18). Yet the Bible also affirms Jesus’ divinity. John 1:1 describes the Word as both with God and as God, later identifying that Word as Jesus. He forgave sins, calmed storms, raised the dead, and accepted worship. His statement “Before Abraham was born, I AM” (John 8:58) echoes God’s own name. After the resurrection, Thomas called Him “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28), and Jesus did not rebuke him. Christian doctrine resolves this in the Trinity: one God in three Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus is distinct from the Father yet fully shares God’s nature. His incarnation was necessary for salvation. If He were only a moral teacher, His death would be tragic but powerless. As the eternal Son of God, His sacrifice offers the forgiveness and life that define Christianity.
