US State Department Apologises After AI Map Misplaces Nigeria at Global AIDS Conference

Nigeria was depicted as a landlocked country in the Sahara, while Mozambique and Côte d’Ivoire were also shown in incorrect locations. Images of the slide circulated online after attendees photographed the presentation. The department said a staff member made rushed changes to the slide before the session and accepted responsibility for the error. The presentation concerned new global health funding agreements linked to PEPFAR, the US HIV/AIDS programme. The incident has drawn criticism over the lack of geographical knowledge and quality checks in an official presentation affecting African health partners.
