Falana Blasts Proposed Electricity Tariff Hike Amid Persistent Outages

Human rights lawyer and SAN Femi Falana has rejected plans by distribution companies to raise electricity tariffs without clear service improvements. He insists any hike must comply with the Electricity Act, which requires demonstrable gains in supply quality. Speaking on a national current affairs programme, Falana faulted both PDP and APC governments for injecting trillions into the power sector with little benefit for consumers. He reminded Nigerians that despite privatisation of 18 firms, supply remains erratic and many households pay more for unreliable service. Falana warned that future tariff increases must be justified by tangible progress. He challenged companies to lift the frequency and duration of power before seeking higher rates. His remarks highlight ongoing frustrations over Band A, Band B classifications and frequent outages in the privatised power market.
