Movie Review: How The Griot Explores Courage, Betrayal and African Storytelling
The Griot, directed by Adeoluwa Owu, is a 2021 film that blends African storytelling traditions with themes of friendship, love, low self-esteem, jealousy and betrayal. The story follows Lakunle, a gifted storyteller whose fear of speaking publicly stops him from sharing his talent. Lakunle’s friend Sanmi exploits this weakness by presenting Lakunle’s stories as his own. His ambition, jealousy and desire for Tiwa eventually destroy their friendship and lead to tragic consequences. The film shows how confidence, encouragement and self-belief can help people overcome fear, while betrayal and revenge can harm innocent people. The traditional costumes, customs and storytelling scenes give the film a strong cultural identity. Its music, cinematography and dialogue also support the mood of the story. However, the King’s illness and recovery through storytelling could have been explained in greater detail. Overall, The Griot is an emotional film with clear lessons about valuing one’s abilities, speaking up for oneself and avoiding jealousy-driven actions.
