How Conspicuous Wealth Provokes Bandit Attacks
The wasteful display of luxury in poverty-ridden areas breeds resentment and attracts criminals. When neighbors see flashy cars, imported clothes and oversized mansions, disillusioned youths feel provoked. With few opportunities to earn a decent living, many young people find banditry more rewarding than risk-filled policing. Ransoms for schoolchildren and teachers now exceed law enforcement pay, blurring the lines between protectors and perpetrators. To curb this trend, we need transparent resource allocation, strong community crime-stoppers and real social programs. Teaching self-reliance and limiting extreme excess can restore hope and reduce incentives for crime.
