Enes Kanter Freedom: NBA Career, Human Rights Activism and Personal Life
Enes Kanter Freedom is a Turkish-born former NBA centre and human rights activist. Born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1992, he played 11 NBA seasons for the Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks, Portland Trail Blazers and Boston Celtics. He was selected third overall in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz. Across his NBA career, he recorded 8,349 points and 5,822 rebounds. He also set a Portland Trail Blazers single-game rebounding record with 30 rebounds against Detroit in 2021. Freedom has been outspoken in his criticism of the Turkish government and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Turkey cancelled his passport and later issued an arrest warrant over alleged links to the Gülen movement. He became a United States citizen in 2021 and legally adopted the name Enes Kanter Freedom. Away from basketball, he has organised free youth camps, supported humanitarian causes and announced plans for basketball schools that bring Christian, Muslim and Jewish students together. His estimated net worth has been reported at about $40 million.
