Ibadan Mine Worker Charged with Stealing N913m Worth of Lithium Stones

Ibadan Mine Worker Charged with Stealing N913m Worth of Lithium Stones

A 35-year-old mine worker, Kabir Oloyede, has been arraigned at an Iyaganku Magistrate’s Court, Ibadan, for allegedly stealing 1,600 metric tons of lithium valued at N913.9 million from a mining warehouse in Otu, Oyo State. He faces a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft under Sections 383, 390(9) and 516 of the Oyo State Criminal Code. Oloyede pleaded not guilty to the offences, which are said to have occurred between January and February 2025. The defence counsel applied for bail, and the court granted it at N10 million with two sureties. Both guarantors must own property in a highbrow area of Ibadan with valid Certificates of Occupancy, and one must be a blood relative. The case has been adjourned to July 8 for hearing.

What do we know about the warehouse's security protocols or oversight that might explain this lapse?

It's surprising that security protocols at a mining warehouse weren't tighter, especially for material valued at nearly a billion naira.

I doubt one person pulled off such a massive theft entirely alone; there must have been insiders or corrupt oversight helping him.

The mining company should conduct a full audit of its stock records and strengthen inventory controls immediately to prevent future losses.
