Making Money vs Building Wealth: The Lesson Changing My Business Mindset
I used to think the goal of business was simply to make money: sell, make a profit, buy more goods and sell again. But I am learning that making money and building wealth are not the same thing. Income is the money that flows into your life. Wealth is what you own after accounting for debts and liabilities. A person can handle millions of naira in turnover and still have little to show for it. Turnover is not wealth, and even profit does not automatically become wealth. The real question is what happens after the money comes in. Do I spend it all, tie it up in stock, or increase my lifestyle each time I earn more? Or do I use part of it to build productive assets, stronger systems, customer relationships, distribution channels and investments that can create value beyond my daily effort? I do not only want to sell more laptops or make profit from one transaction. I want to build a valuable company that can become an asset, not just a job I created for myself. That takes discipline, smart reinvestment, patience and control over lifestyle inflation. I am still learning, but I now want to focus less on merely making money and more on turning my earnings into lasting wealth.
