Why Academic INEC Chairs Keep Failing Nigeria’s Elections
Since 1999, every INEC chairman has come from academia. Each held top degrees and was seen as an elite custodian of knowledge. Yet credible elections remain elusive. Academic unions like ASUU and CONUA lobby hard for funding and benefits. Their stand-offs with government affect students. But they stay silent when the electoral process is questioned. The current INEC chair now faces evidence of partisanship. Will academic bodies defend the integrity of their own or stay mute? Ultimately, integrity and experience matter more than elite degrees if Nigeria is to hold free, fair, and transparent elections.
