Hospital Too Far Leaf: Why It Should Be Properly Cooked Before Eating

“Hospital Too Far,” also known as Jatropha tanjorensis, sandpaper leaf, Ewe Ipin, Baure, Asesa or Jesus leaf, is commonly used in some Nigerian homes as a vegetable and herbal remedy. The leaf should be properly washed and cooked before eating. It may contain compounds that can irritate the stomach when consumed raw or in large quantities. Parboiling for several minutes may help soften the leaves and reduce dirt and microbes. Although people use it traditionally for blood sugar, blood pressure, inflammation and wound care, these health claims are not a substitute for medical treatment. Avoid frequent or excessive use, especially if you have liver or kidney problems, are pregnant, or take medication for diabetes or hypertension. Speak with a qualified health professional before using it as a remedy.
