Dangote’s Namibia Expansion: Could Walvis Bay Become a New Investment Frontier?
Dangote Group has reportedly announced plans to build a major fuel storage and distribution hub in Walvis Bay, Namibia. The proposed project includes a 1.6-million-barrel storage terminal and pipeline links to Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Namibia has a population of about 3 million spread across a landmass almost as large as Nigeria’s. The project could position Walvis Bay as a key logistics gateway for southern African countries that depend heavily on imported fuel. For investors and young Africans in the value chain, the potential opportunities may extend beyond fuel. Demand could grow for warehouses, truck parks, fabrication yards, worker accommodation, short-let apartments and services around the transport corridor. The big question is whether this development can create the kind of property and logistics boom Nigerians have seen around Ibeju-Lekki, or whether the risks of investing early in a new market will outweigh the opportunity.
