Solar Streetlights to Double as AI Data Centres in Katsina
A UK technology company has signed an agreement with Katsina State to deploy 50,000 solar-powered streetlights that also serve as low-powered AI data centres. Each iLamp unit uses a small NVIDIA-powered chip and solar panels to run basic AI workloads and traffic sensors. These smart lampposts can monitor parking, speeding, seatbelt compliance and perform licence-plate recognition. They include security features that disable the chip if anyone attempts to tamper with it. CPG plans to fund the project through a green bond and share traffic fine revenue with the state. The initiative could reduce grid energy use, supplement large data centres and generate new income streams for local authorities.
