Mikel Obi Urges NFF Chiefs to Resign After Super Eagles Miss 2026 World Cup
Former Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel has called for the resignation of the entire Nigeria Football Federation board led by Ibrahim Musa Gusau. His demand follows the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria were knocked out after a tense penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in November 2025. Since their World Cup debut in 1994, the Super Eagles have only missed three tournaments: 2006, 2022 and now 2026. This marks their first back-to-back absence. Speaking to talkSPORT, Mikel—who earned 89 caps and featured at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups—described the campaign as “a disaster.” He said a country of over 300 million deserves better results and must hold its leaders to account. "The FA people running our game must all resign," he said. "African football is growing fast, and Nigeria is being left behind. We should be leading the way, like Morocco."
