7 Nigerians Share What It Now Costs to Maintain a Social Life

With the cost of living rising, many Nigerians are spending heavily just to celebrate milestones, attend events or spend time with friends and family. Seven people shared how these social expenses affected their finances. A Lagos resident spent about ₦1 million on a birthday party after short-let owners raised their prices. Another woman spent more than ₦250,000 on an outfit, hair, accessories and photos for a church women’s fellowship event. Others recalled spending ₦350,000 on a best friend’s birthday, more than ₦200,000 at a beach rave, ₦50,000 at a university reunion and over ₦500,000 travelling for a family farewell. For one homemaker, even ₦10,000 for a movie outing and food meant cutting back for the rest of the month. Despite the financial strain, most said the memories, friendships and family moments made the spending worthwhile.
