Why 1 Enoch Was Excluded: Examining the Hyperbolic Account of Noah’s Birth
I believe the Book of Enoch was excluded from the canon because of its excessive hyperbole. In chapter 106, Noah’s birth is depicted as so extraordinary that it terrified his father, Lamech. According to the text, Noah appeared at birth with skin “white as snow and red as a rose,” hair “white like wool,” and eyes that shone like the rays of the sun. He even spoke praises the moment he left the midwife’s hands. Lamech feared Noah was the offspring of fallen angels and fled to his father, Methuselah. When Methuselah consulted Enoch, he confirmed Noah’s lineage but explained the divine appearance was a sign of Noah’s future role in preserving righteousness. This portrayal of Noah as a near-divine figure contrasts sharply with the biblical narrative, which describes him simply as a righteous man without any supernatural attributes.
