Enugu Health Commissioner Warns Against Self-Medication, Herbal Mixtures and Unhealthy Diets
Enugu State Health Commissioner George Ugwu says the perceived rise in kidney and cardiovascular diseases may reflect improved awareness, more testing and earlier hospital visits. He urged residents not to panic but to go for medical checks and take warning signs seriously. He warned that self-medication, prolonged use of painkillers, unregulated herbal mixtures, poor diet, obesity, alcohol misuse and physical inactivity can increase the risk of kidney and heart complications. Residents were advised to eat balanced local meals, reduce salty and highly processed foods, stay active and seek professional medical advice before taking medicines. The commissioner said the state is working to improve healthcare access and regulate medical supplies. A medical practitioner on the programme also noted that kidney and cardiovascular conditions can affect children, especially after poorly treated infections, severe dehydration, malaria or malnutrition.
