Oakland Bishop Proposes 'Third Testament', Labels Parts of the Bible Problematic
Yvette Flunder, senior pastor of City of Refuge UCC in Oakland and presiding bishop of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries, said in a recent Center for Public Theology & Policy address that some texts in both the Old and New Testaments are “problematic.” She highlighted passages that instruct slaves to obey masters and tell women to remain silent in church, arguing these lines reflect human views about God rather than God’s own word. Flunder called for a Third Testament to replace or supplement current scriptures and insisted the New Testament itself is not the Word of God but words about God.
