Jessica Oji Wins Commonwealth Shot Put Silver for Nigeria on International Debut

Jessica Oji Wins Commonwealth Shot Put Silver for Nigeria on International Debut — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Jessica Oji won silver in the women’s shot put at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, earning a medal for Nigeria in her first major international appearance. The 19-year-old produced a best throw of 17.87m. Oji finished level with Jamaica’s Lloydricia Cameron but claimed silver on countback because her second-best throw was better. Canada’s Sarah Mitton won gold with 19.88m. The result ends Nigeria’s 20-year wait for a women’s Commonwealth Games shot put medal, since Vivian Chukwuemeka’s silver in 2006. Oji, a University of Pennsylvania student, switched her international allegiance to Nigeria in February 2026 after setting multiple Ivy League records. Her medal added to a strong day for Team Nigeria in Glasgow, with Goodness Nwachukwu also winning women’s discus gold in world-record fashion.
