COOU Professor Challenges Suspension in Court, Seeks ₦2.62bn Damages

Prof. Chike Osegbue of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, has asked the National Industrial Court to overturn his suspension and award him ₦2.62 billion in damages. Osegbue, a Political Science professor and contender in the university’s recent vice-chancellor selection process, was suspended in January over allegations that he failed to teach Environmental Politics and Sustainable Development to postgraduate students. He argues that the disciplinary action breached the university’s laws, postgraduate academic regulations and the Nigerian Constitution. The court granted the defendants leave to file processes out of time and adjourned the case until November 24 for hearing.
