YIAGA Sounds Alarm: Vote Buying with Rice, Indomie and Cash Ahead of Ekiti Poll

YIAGA Sounds Alarm: Vote Buying with Rice, Indomie and Cash Ahead of Ekiti Poll

YIAGA Africa has warned that cash and food items are being handed out to influence voters before the Ekiti governorship election. Safiya Bichi, Head of Knowledge Management and Learning at the group, said rice, Indomie noodles and money are being distributed alongside promises to secure votes. Bichi urged young voters to reject the narrative that ballots do not count. She stressed that the prevalence of vote buying shows politicians believe every vote matters. Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission says it is fully prepared for the June 20 poll. INEC’s chairman confirmed an increase in registered voters in Ekiti from just under 1 million in 2023 to over 1.05 million ahead of the election.

It's telling that the giveaways include both rice and cash, suggesting a mix of short-term relief and financial incentive tactics.

Local observers and civil society groups should document each instance of vote buying and report it immediately to electoral authorities.
