Pope Leo XIV Urges Protection for Lebanese Civilians Amid Middle East Conflict
During his Regina Coeli prayer in St Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV vowed to stand “closer than ever” with the people of Lebanon. He called on all warring parties to respect the principle of humanity and protect civilians from the “atrocious effects of war.” Without naming any country, he urged leaders to choose dialogue over violence. He condemned the “idolatry of self and money” and pleaded: “Stop! It is time for peace!” His comments followed unsuccessful Iran-US talks in Pakistan aimed at ending the wider regional conflict. The pontiff will soon begin an 11-day tour of Africa, promoting bridge-building with the Islamic world. I pray more Nigerians recognise his humanity rather than label him a terrorist sympathiser for criticising the US and Israel.
