Blessing Uzzi’s Before We Fall Asleep Examines Partnership, Job Loss and Domestic Labour
Blessing Uzzi returns as showrunner for the second Zikoko Life anthology and also writes and co-directs Before We Fall Asleep. The film stars Tobi Bakre and Onyinye Odokoro as Tola and Nazo, a couple whose relationship is tested after Tola loses his job and becomes a stay-at-home father. The story challenges the belief that men are merely “helping” with childcare and housework. Uzzi argues that partners should share responsibility for their home and child, rather than treating domestic labour as a woman’s duty. The film avoids making either partner a villain. Instead, it presents two exhausted people trying to understand each other while navigating money pressures, parenting and changing expectations in a Nigerian relationship. Uzzi says the dialogue and characters were shaped to feel familiar to everyday Nigerians, inviting viewers to reflect on whether they truly see their partners as equals.
