Lagos Sureties Appeal to Chief Judge to Restore Igbosere Court Access
Aggrieved sureties who assist defendants in securing bail at Igbosere Magistrates’ Court and other Lagos courts have asked Chief Judge Kazeem Alogba to lift a month-long ban on their court access. They say the restrictions have prevented them from perfecting bail conditions for indigent defendants, many of whom live outside Lagos. The sureties argue their services have helped prevent prolonged detention and decongest correctional facilities by ensuring defendants meet bail terms. Spokesman Olusegun Philips stressed that none of their clients has jumped bail. He appealed to the Chief Judge to direct the Igbosere court to reverse the directive, so poor defendants do not remain stranded in custody and the judiciary’s reputation remains intact.
