Nigeria’s University Power Programme Began Under Buhari, Continues Under Tinubu

Nigeria’s university power-grid initiative, officially called the Energising Education Programme, began in 2017 under the Muhammadu Buhari administration. The Rural Electrification Agency is implementing the project. The programme aims to provide reliable 24-hour electricity to 37 federal universities and seven teaching hospitals through solar-hybrid and gas-fired captive power plants. Early projects included a major installation at Bayero University, Kano. The programme has continued through later phases under subsequent administrations, including President Bola Tinubu’s government, with support from development partners such as the World Bank and African Development Bank.
