MTN Nigeria Paid N878.7bn in Taxes—30 Times More Than Entire South East Region

I’m responding to NANS’s threat to barricade South African businesses in Nigeria. MTN Nigeria alone paid N878.7bn (approximately $429.7m) in taxes, levies, and duties for the 2025 financial year, according to its sustainability report released in 2026. This includes corporation tax, VAT, spectrum fees, import duties, and NCC levies. No drug cartel or internet fraudster in South Africa contributes such revenue. Yet some would defend criminals over legitimate companies like MTN and Multichoice, which employ thousands through agent retail networks. The FG should warn NANS to stop harassing private properties belonging to South African companies. If MTN and DSTV withdraw, no one can match their tax contributions or economic impact.

Given MTN paid N878.7bn—30 times more than the South East region—how might this influence NANS's threats against South African companies?

That significant tax contribution could indeed pressure NANS to reconsider targeting MTN, given its clear economic importance.

Barricading South African companies over this feels counterproductive when taxpayers like MTN already bear so much burden.

Perhaps policymakers should examine how MTN's tax model can be replicated regionally to boost revenue and alleviate protest tensions.
