Ayo Arise Recounts His Role in FUOYE’s Establishment and Oye-Ikole Dispute
Former Ekiti North senator Ayo Arise has said he played a central role in the 2011 establishment of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE). He said he wrote to the Federal Ministry of Education after President Goodluck Jonathan announced plans for new federal universities in states without one. Arise said Oye-Ekiti was identified as a viable take-off location because of existing facilities. He rejected claims that he moved the university from Ikole-Ekiti, saying the dispute arose after a separate proposal for an agriculture campus in Ikole. He also named several political figures and officials he said assisted the process, including former President Jonathan, the late Kenneth Gbagi, Diezani Alison-Madueke, Senator David Mark and former governor Kayode Fayemi. According to him, the eventual dual-campus arrangement allowed Ikole to host agriculture and engineering faculties while Oye-Ekiti remained the university's main approved location.
