If God Is Light, Why Does He Use Darkness for Judgment and Separation?
If God is Light, then darkness can be understood as the loss, withdrawal or deprivation of that Light. In this view, judgment and separation from God are experienced as a diminishing of spiritual light. This may appear as confusion, ignorance, fear, anxiety, blindness or a lack of revelation. The degree to which a person receives or loses this Light shapes whether life feels like heaven or hell. Satan and demons were not spared from judgment simply because they were not immediately sent to a final place of punishment. Their separation from God is itself a form of hell, because no living spirit can truly thrive apart from the Light that gives life, strength, healing and vitality. Darkness is therefore not merely an absence; it is the painful consequence of being cut off from God. Scripture also presents darkness as a direct instrument of judgment. Psalm 105 describes God sending darkness upon Egypt, while Revelation 16 speaks of darkness covering the kingdom of the beast and causing intense pain. Darkness can therefore represent both God withdrawing His presence and God actively bringing judgment against evil.
