Why Wole Soyinka Prefers Orisa Worship to Christianity and Islam
Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka says he finds traditional Orisa worship more artistic and inclusive than Christianity or Islam. In a recent interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo, he explained that Orisa faith appealed to him because of its mystery, ecumenical spirit, and non-violent nature. He contrasted this with what he sees as the less mysterious aspects of the major foreign religions. Soyinka also shared that he does not believe in the Christian or Islamic God, describing himself as atheist in that sense. He insists, however, that every human has a spiritual core and considers himself highly sensitive to it. The playwright added that adaptations of his life and works often cause him discomfort, as they fail to capture his true essence.
