Miguel Almiron Becomes First Player Sent Off for Covering Mouth at World Cup

Miguel Almiron Becomes First Player Sent Off for Covering Mouth at World Cup

Paraguay winger Miguel Almiron was shown a red card for covering his mouth while speaking to Turkey’s Mert Muldur during their World Cup group match in San Francisco. The offence came just before half-time with Paraguay leading 1-0. Muldur alerted a nearby official and the VAR intervened. Referee Ivan Barton then sent Almiron off under the new rule aimed at preventing hidden insults. Despite being a man down for over 45 minutes, Paraguay held on to beat Turkey 1-0. They will qualify for the last 32 if they win their final group game against Australia.

It seems surprising a simple mouth cover triggered such a red card, especially when verbal exchanges happen all the time on the field.

Honestly, players always try to hide what they say, so a yellow would have been enough without turning it into a dramatic red.

Coaches could remind referees to consider intent before harsh penalties and encourage clearer communication guidelines for international matches.
